When Tom Ford assumed his position as chairman of the CFDA earlier this year, he kicked off his tenure with a radical announcement: New York Fashion Week would be just five days long. Shortened from its typical timeline, the new week was devised to lure more international press and retailers to NYFW as well as create a more streamlined and compact week. Today we have a first look at Ford’s vision for the new New York Fashion Week, which starts with Telfar on September 6 and culminates with Marc Jacobs, as always, on September 11.
The shortened schedule raised some concern initially that many brands would be left out or cut; however many of New York’s power players remain. The Row, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Proenza Schouler, Coach 1941, Anna Sui, Prabal Gurung, Gabriela Hearst, Brandon Maxwell, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Ford himself are all included on the schedule, as are smaller brands like Snow Xue Gao and Matthew Adams Dolan. Still, there are some noticeable absences: Rodarte, which showed in California last season, is not on the schedule, and neither are Opening Ceremony, Rachel Comey, or Rag & Bone.
The initial schedule is likely to evolve, with brands planning off-piste shows, dinners, and parties in lieu of traditional runway shows. Vogue Runway will be keeping track of all this and more once the season kicks off on September 6. Stay tuned!
